Welcome to the Catholic Parish of Tavistock in West Devon and to the church of Our Lady of the Assumption and St Mary Magdalen. We are a vibrant community with parishioners of all ages participating in parish life. Many of the events are described and illustrated in the "Activities" section of this website.
Sunday Mass attendance is about 100 parishioners; and more than 200 people attended the two Masses celebrating the Nativity of Our Lord on 24th and 25th December. A joyous occasion.
In March 2019 the Parish welcomed our new Parish Priest Fr. Martin Stone, when he celebrated his first Mass at our church. In August 2019 there was a reorganisation within the Diocese and Fr. Martin became Parish Priest of Our Lady of the Assumption, Tavistock; and Parish Priest of Holy Cross, Yelverton.
In March of this year we had planned for a celebration on the first anniversary of Fr. Martin's arrival. Unfortunately with the Coronus 19 virus rampant throughout the country, Mass could no longer be said as a public act of worship; especially disappointing as we approached the climax of Holy Week.
From the beginning of July our church was open again for the celebration of Sunday Mass with guidelines to be followed. The average attendance for Sunday Mass, since the church reopened with reduced seating, was approximately 50. However, from early November new lockdown rules meant that churches were once again closed but we are pleased to say that from Sunday 5th December Sunday Mass will once again be celebrated at our church.
The 'Ave Maria' is sung by Hannah Mayhew, and we wish to thank Hannah and Kevin Mayhew Publishers for permission to use this recording on our website.
