Welcome to the Catholic Parish of Tavistock in West Devon and to the church of Our Lady of the Assumption and St Mary Magdalen. We are a vibrant community with parishioners of all ages participating in parish life. Many of the events are described and illustrated in the "Activities" section of this website.
Until the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, Mass attendance was about 100 parishioners; and more than 200 people attended the two Masses celebrating the Nativity of Our Lord on 24th and 25th December 2019. A joyous occasion.
In March 2019 the Parish welcomed our new Parish Priest Fr. Martin Stone, when he celebrated his first Mass at our church. In August 2019 there was a reorganisation within the Diocese and Fr. Martin became Parish Priest of Our Lady of the Assumption, Tavistock; and Parish Priest of Holy Cross, Yelverton.
We had planned for a celebration on the first anniversary of Fr. Martin's arrival. Unfortunately with the Covid-19 virus rampant throughout the country, Mass could no longer be said as a public act of worship; especially disappointing as we approached the climax of Holy Week.
From the beginning of July 2020 our church was open again for the celebration of Sunday Mass with guidelines to be followed. The average attendance for Sunday Mass, since the church reopened with reduced seating, has been approximately 50.
However, with the "road map" announced 23 February 2021 we trust that the situation regarding celebrating Mass will slowly revert back to normal.
For Lent this year CAFOD are raising money to help supply clean water to those without easy access. This will be through a sponsored "Walk for Water" on Saturday 20th February, when parishioners will commit to walking a certain distance with sponsorship.
To date more than 50 Walkers and Sponsors have raised in excess of £1,000.00; an impressive achievement. The project is still open, so if you wish to add your donation, please click on the link below to access the parish JustGiving Page. Thank you.
The 'Ave Maria' is sung by Hannah Mayhew, and we wish to thank Hannah and Kevin Mayhew Publishers for permission to use this recording on our website.
