Welcome to the Catholic Parish of Tavistock in West Devon and to the church of Our Lady of the Assumption and St Mary Magdalene. We are a vibrant community with parishioners of all ages participating in parish life. Many of the events are described and illustrated in the "Activities" section of this website.
Until the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, Mass attendance was about 100 parishioners; and more than 200 people attended the two Masses celebrating the Nativity of Our Lord on 24th and 25th December 2019. A joyous occasion.
Following the lifting of' restrictions as of July 2021, and the announcements in December, Mass is slowly returning to 'normal'. Details are given in the Parish Newsletter.
On the third Sunday of Advent, Bishop Mark O'Toole celebrated Mass and then presented the Diocesan Medal of St. Boniface to Guiseppina Pelosi, known to all as Nina. Co-celebrants were Fr. Cyriacus and Canon Laurence Pelosi, nephew of Nina.
A recent survey has shown that the church tower, more than 100' tall, is in need of repair. The Diocese applied for and received a significant grant from Heritage England in order that the work can be undertaken. The repair requires that scaffolding be erected to the top of the tower; the work will start in December 2021 and is expected to be completed by June 2022.
The 'Ave Maria' is sung by Hannah Mayhew, and we wish to thank Hannah and Kevin Mayhew Publishers for permission to use this recording on our website.
Safe Spaces is a free and independent support service, providing a confidential, personal and safe space for anyone who has been abused by someone in the Church or as a result of their relationship with the Catholic Church of England and Wales.
